A permanent home for important work

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 2008 Update: The Sanctuary is in the process of being sold to a local private investor and it is hoped the transaction will be finalized by Feb 2009. EMRO regrets having to sell this wonderful property but funds do not allow us to continue to keep it. However, the shelter in Al Mokattam is still functioning and has on average 20-30 Mau cats at any time, feral and tame.

November 2007 Update: Due to lack of funds, all work on the sanctuary for feral Mau cats is on hold until further notice. The Sanctuary is presently up for rent or sale in order to help raise funds for the shelter cats at HQ (Mokattam, Cairo). We will continue to keep our HQ doors open for the tame Maus as long as possible. Please see "How you can help" if you can donate funds, help adopt or sponsor a Mau.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most Maus captured will be neutered/spayed (altered, de-sexed) and kept in a sanctuary as a heritage treasure, which will be open to the public for educational purposes with an opportunity to donate to their welfare. Efforts will be made to re-home any tame Egyptian Mau cats, at cost recovery; otherwise the feral cats will be maintained in the sanctuary for their life time.

We already have secured a sanctuary location in Sakkara (please see our Update for Spring 2005), appropriately near Giza and the ancient pyramids. We plan on following the standards of The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS) and are hoping to become an Accredited Animal Rescue Facility.

THE SANCTUARY

EMRO has located a building and land for the Egyptian Mau sanctuary. It is an old carpet factory on the main, touristic road to Sakkara, half way between the Giza and Sakkara pyramids. It is in a good location and big enough to make into a reasonable-sized sanctuary. It is about 13,000SF or almost a third of an acre, with an enclosed yard full of fruit and palm trees.

The building presently has two floors of about 250SM (2500 SF each floor) and is plumbed for water and electricity. It has the potential to be built up another level or two which would allow for touristic shops with revenue-making potential to support the non-profit sanctuary on the main level. A veterinary clinic space is also planned, as well as a cafe for the locals and tourists.

Note: Work is progressing on the EMRO sanctuary, clearing the ground and building. To our delight, we have discovered there is a guava grove in the back yard, and we are cultivating the old fruit trees. There are also some apricot, mango, lemon and palm trees. The pump is again operational. We hope to make a temporary shelter for the feral cats by the end of the year, while renovations continue (please see our Update for Autumn 2005).
